Summer is just around the corner and so many of you have been asking about about healthy sunscreen options.

But I have to tell you, I honestly have a love/hate relationship with sunscreens.

I get why it’s important to protect our skin from UV damage and possible skin cancer, but applying sunscreen daily and multiple times when out in the sun just seems a bit excessive.

The recent information about oxybenzone and other chemicals found in sunscreens being absorbed through the skin has left many of us wondering ‘is sunscreen bad for you?’

I usually try to provide a physical sunscreen with clothing, hats, and shade rather than relying on a sunscreen product everyday.  And even with a good sunscreen I try to  use shade and avoid the most UV intense hours of the day.

But, sometimes that just won’t work, and having a good sunscreen in your bag is essential for those times.

We want to protect ourselves and our kids with a non-toxic sunscreen.  But deciding what is the best sunscreen is challenging!

Make sure you pin for later!

I know I’ve definitely been overwhelmed by the number of choices in the sunscreen aisle at the store.  And when you go online the choices seem endless.

So many of them claim to be the best non-toxic sunscreen out there, but which ones are really the best?

Well, I decided to find out for you!  And not just the best sunscreen for kids or the best sunscreens for baby, but the best sunscreens for everyone in your family!

So, how did I choose?  Well, I checked out the Environmental Working Groups (EWG) sunscreen guide for 2019 and then I checked their top choices with the ThinkDirty apps to find the best ones I could.  I also tried to take into account price and how easy it would be to find in a store.

If something wasn’t rated by ThinkDirty I didn’t include it here, because EWG is great, but ThinkDirty is a bit tougher on ingredients and I wanted to find the BEST sunscreens.

Let’s get to the sunscreens!

Best Sunscreens for Babies and Kids

You may notice that a lot of these are not organic sunscreen options.  Finding an organic option for something like sunscreen can be really hard, and organic doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s the best or safest sunscreen for kids.

  1. Thanks for this listing. I hate sunscreen too, especially because a little vitamin D never hurt anyone, and after sunscreen was invented, our cancer rates went up. Seems a little coincidental that we aren’t allowing our body to do what it was meant to do.

  2. LOVE this roundup! It will make it so much easier to pick out sunscreen this summer. I’ve tried the goddess garden brand and it seemed to work but I had a hard time getting it to “soak in” to my skin. Also, didn’t know Badger had sunscreen! Will have to give it a try.

  3. Thank you for these suggestions! Working on a homestead and growing most of our own food, I’m out in the sun a lot. I searched high and low last year trying to find a natural sunscreen that worked and was zero waste. I finally went with Laguna Herbals because it comes in a metal tin. I’ve been really happy with it so far. You’ll have to check it out! 🙂
